Invitation to attend the 5th Batch of Fisheries Observer Training Course on November 3-29, 2011

The BFAR will be conducting the 5th Batch of Fisheries Observer Training on November 3-29, 2011. There will be a total of 30 participants to be trained (15-20 slots coming from BFAR) and 10-15 trainees offered to newly graduates/not yet employed or interested BS Fisheries Graduate or any related sciences). The In House-Training will be conducted at the BFAR MCS Station and Fishing Technology Laboratory in Navotas City. Meals and lodging for the entire duration is free while transportation (from home and to Navotas City and vice) and other expenses shall be borne of the trainee.
The successful trainees shall be certified observer by BFAR and subsequently requested to be authorized by the WCPFC. The Observers shall be deployed to purse seine, ring net and longline commercial fishing vessels operating within the Philippine 200 mile EEZ and high seas to collect necessary information for the monitoring, assessment and enforcement activities required to implement an ecosystem-based approach to fisheries management. Observer will obtain scientific data directly from fishing operations. They will record important scientific information on target catch, non-target catch (including incidental catch of seabirds, marine mammals and turtles), and discards. If deployed, Observers shall be paid by the vessel owner a Daily subsistence allowance (Php 1,200/day if deployed within national waters; high seas and other countries EEZ USD 40/day) to be paid to the FOP Observer upon deployment to the vessel which will commence on the scheduled port departure date and arrival of the vessel. The WCPFC will implement a 100% observer coverage beginning 2010 and complementary measures shall be adopted by the country - a good job opportunity for graduates of the training.
